Ngāti Kahu welcomed the Australian Indigenous Basketball (All Stars) team at Wairoa Marae last
night following their six hour journey from Brisbane. “We had asked the All Stars Head Coach Joel
Khalu in 2016 to come and stay at our marae the next time they came to Aotearoa, so it’s great the
team have taken the opportunity to stay with us. We can share our culture and they can meet the
whānau. It’s all about connecting, sharing stories and enjoying basketball” said Antoine Coffin.
The team also visited local Māori school ‘Te Wharekura o Mauao’ where Coach Joel and his team
took 30 student basketballers through their paces doing several fun skills and drills. The kura had
also welcomed the team in a special ‘Hui Okawa’ ceremony. For many of the Australian players this
was their first time immersed in Māori culture. The ceremony was something special said one of the
Australian players who felt quite tearful.
