Those are the numbers from the weekend. One hundred and ten balls were bouncing in preparation for the 2018 Māori National Tournament. Sixteen Te Maru o Mauao basketball teams practised on Sunday at three venues, Te Wharekura o Mauao, Tauranga Intermediate and ACG Tauranga. “The biggest growth has been in the under 13 and under 15 age grades. With 2 teams in these Tama and Kōtiro grades we have grown from 11 teams last year to 16 this year. We are experiencing 50% growth year on year. Next season could be 24 teams! We’ll be taking 14 of the 16 teams to Nationals. Our biggest challenge is growing coaches and managers who give of their own time and picking our best opportunities to grow the sport among Māori”, says Chairman Antoine Coffin.
